Studying STEM & Pre-Med at Barnard
Question: For a student interested in STEM fields and pre-med programs, is a liberal arts college still an appropriate and/or rigorous setting for these studies? Can you tell me more about the STEM fields at Barnard?
Answer: As a current senior majoring in Cell and Molecular Biology and on the pre-med track, I've taken a number of courses in the Biology, Chemistry, and Physics departments. STEM at Barnard is quite popular - 30% of Barnard students major in STEM fields. Most professors in the sciences at Barnard are active in research in addition to teaching. We also have special programs like the Summer Research Institute which provides opportunities for Barnard students to delve into research full-time during the summer.
One of my favorite things about my sciences courses is that the professors are invested in my success in the course and beyond - one of my professors even held office hours every day of the week! I feel I've been challenged by my coursework and received a great foundation in each of the subjects for which I've taken a class. My professors and the Health Professions Advising Office have also been very supportive in helping me along the way as I complete my major requirements and my pre-medical requirements. They are knowledgeable about the application process to medical schools and are always happy to help. I am really happy I chose to pursue my pre-med and Biology coursework at Barnard because of the challenging coursework, opportunities for high-level research, as well as the strong academic support and resources.
