Meet the Professor: Belinda Archibong

Meet Professor Belinda Archibong of the Department of Economics! Some of Professor Archibong’s research areas include development economics, political economy, epidemics on economic history, and environmental economics with an African regional focus.

What do you like about teaching at Barnard?
“The students are excellent and engaged and working with such a great, intelligent and motivated community of students is my favorite part of teaching at Barnard.”

What are some of your favorite classes you teach or have taught at Barnard?
“I enjoy all my courses at Barnard, but a course that I've really enjoyed, because I've had the opportunity to both take the class (as an undergrad at Columbia) and teach the class (now as a professor at Barnard) is a course called "Logic and Limits of Economic Justice". The course is an advanced introduction to welfare economics: the branch of economics concerned with understanding how to assess and improve [the] wellbeing of members of society. And we get to think about and debate topics as varied as  immigration, climate change, affirmative action and incarceration and think carefully about the debates around welfare, justice, equality and freedom.”

Do you have a favorite spot on campus?
“The views of campus/the city from our new Milstein Center are amazing and the top floors of the building have quickly become my favorite spots on campus.”
